House Fires Have 5 Main Causes – Do You Know Them?

It’s a scary thought, but home fires are still a very real danger—even in today’s world. According to the latest report from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), between 2014 and 2018, just five general causes accounted for 86% of reported home fires, 95% of home fire deaths, and 83% of home fire injuries. Knowing these causes is the first step in keeping your family and home safe.
1. Cooking
It might surprise you, but cooking is the number one cause of home fires and fire injuries, and the second-leading cause of home fire deaths. We spend so much time in the kitchen that it’s easy to forget the real danger. High heat, open flames, and distractions can quickly turn a simple meal into a fire hazard. Never leave cooking unattended, keep flammable items away from the stove, and make sure your fire extinguisher is easily accessible.
2. Heating Equipment
Next on the list is heating equipment, which is the second leading cause of home fires and the third leading cause of fire-related deaths. Chimney creosote build-up, as well as space heaters—both fixed and portable—are the main culprits. Make sure your chimneys are cleaned regularly, and never leave a space heater unattended.
3. Electrical Distribution and Lighting
Electrical issues come in third. Faulty wiring, overloaded outlets, damaged cords, and improper repairs can all quietly set the stage for a fire. The scary part? These problems often exist long before a fire ever starts. Regular inspections, using power strips correctly, and updating old wiring are critical steps in prevention.
4. Intentional Fire-Setting
The fourth leading cause is intentional fire-setting, which sadly includes a large number of suicides. While prevention here can be complex, awareness, community support, and access to mental health resources can help reduce these tragedies.
5. Smoking Materials
Finally, smoking materials rank fifth in home fires but are actually the leading cause of home fire deaths. Despite smoking rates dropping over the years, the danger remains. If you smoke, always do so outside, and ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished before discarding them.
